2013 Specialty Show Critiques

Island & Pacific Labrador Retriever Club
Specialty
October 24th 2013

I apologise for the delay in getting my critiques to you, when I arrived home it was all hands on deck to produce 40 Christmas cakes for this weekend – David and I supply a few of the Labrador people in our country with their Christmas cakes, and as it is the Labrador Clubs Open Show this weekend it is a perfect time to deliver them.

Enough of me twittering on – I was really pleased with the quality of the exhibits under me at the Specialty, I have an abhorrence of fat or overweight dogs and I like to see them as the Standard describes with leg length matching body depth, you are producing a very nice type of Labrador.  I did find some good coats with the correct hard feel to them but many were soft, I put this down to just being bathed, if you have to bath before a show do it at least 3 days before the show so that the coat gets it correct hard feel back!!  A soft open coat has no weather proofing qualities and so is incorrect for our breed.

Thank you for inviting me, your hospitality and set up were very good indeed.  I was impressed by the quality of the dogs shown under me, and by the way you joined in with my antics.

Some of you commentated on my measuring the muzzle length, as we  have always worked all of our labrador’s in the field, picking up game in the shooting season, it is important that we do not have too short a muzzle. Otherwise they struggle to pick up a decent sized pheasant or duck.  Even if we do not all have the opportunity to work our dogs, one should stick to the standard that was drawn up by the people who started off our breed and worked their dogs.  A decent length of muzzle is needed, not the short one of a Rottweiler.

I feel it a pity that no write-ups on the dogs in Canada or the USA are given by your judges, they never need to explain their thoughts, which I personally do not think is a good thing.

Junior Puppy Male 9 – 12 months
1stHarding’s, Martindale Maximum Frost Royal, pale yellow of 10 months, nice size, pleasing head for age, good neck and lay of shoulder, upper arm could have a little more angulation, well made through the ribs with spring depth and length, strong loin and topline good tailset, nice low hocks from which he drove well.  Coat a little soft.

Specials Class
My Specials Class was a pleasure  - only one or two did not come up to the Standard I was looking for.  My Best In Show & Best Puppy was Ch Xena’s High Caliber, bred and owned by Keith Bard (well done) all male, strong, beautiful but without lumber 11 months super shape, kind head and expression well made all though the body, super stifle and second thigh, moving so soundly on well boned legs and tight feet, coat of correct feel and texture.  I was surprised to find he was a puppy, I had forgotten that this could happen in Canada, we have to get a CC past the age of 1 year to qualify for the title of Champion.  I hope he remains like this – he was a picture. My Best Opposite Sex in Show was Cheryl Young’s, Makaila Dancing W The Starcaast,  18 months black, very smart lady, classic head, kind and gentle expression, well made through the body, in excellent coat and sound mover.  My Select Male  a 2 ½ year old yellow,  owned by Jackie Kurkjian Ch Graegill’s Wild One, A big upstanding boy with most pleasing head, good neck and lay of shoulder, good through the ribs, loin and topline, moving out well in excellent coat. BIOGRAPHY FOR BARBARA NOWAK

My involvement with Labrador Retrievers began in 1967 with the acquisition of a black female from Canadian bred stock. Cinder was 9 months old when my daughter Kim arrived and became the self-appointed nanny. She guarded the baby’s crib, carried soiled diapers outdoors, and stole the pacifier. Cinder was bred once and produced Al-reen’s Rainy Day, UD. Rainy was mildly dysplastic and never bred. However, Rainy jumped full height in the Open & Utility classes until she was ten and introduced me to competitive obedience and judging.

I was fortunate to co-own my first show quality Labrador, Ch. Somersett Circe Minx, CDX, sired by CH Sandylands Midas, with Merlyn Foote. Circe was bred to CH. Briary Trace of Brian and produced five champions out of her first litter of fourteen. Marjorie Brainard, Briary Labradors, was also an influential mentor. Marjorie gave me the opportunity to own CH Briary Shillelagh out of CH Lockerbie Brian Boru and CH Lockerbie Shillelagh. This breeding combination was repeated three times with each litter producing champions that became the foundation for many breeding programs.
Marjorie Brainard, Helen Warwick, Marianne Foote, Joan Read, and Merlyn Foote were patient mentors who openly shared their knowledge, helped develop my eye for a correct Labrador, and influenced my involvement in the breed

At the present time, I currently breed and exhibit Broyhill Labradors with my daughter, Kim. I also judge obedience and rally trials. Judging a Labrador Retriever Specialty is an honor and privilege. I look forward to meeting new friends and the wonderful Labradors who own them.

I have been blessed with the opportunities to attend Labrador Retriever specialties all over the U.S. and Canada. The specialty put on by the IPLRC is second to few! The site is carefully chosen and scheduled to be held at a perfect time for participants. Most exceptional is the way the club members work together setting up the many tables of trophies, raffle, goodies and rarely have I seen such an effort to give out 'Welcome Bags' to exhibitors picking up armband numbers ! The club is also exceptional at selecting respected judges with a long history of knowing breed type and correctness. I continue to be very impressed.
